Gorillaz’ Jamie Hewlett Plans Ambitious London Art Exhibition

Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett, the renowned artist responsible for the iconic characters behind the animated band, will unveil his first ever art exhibition, “The Suggestionists,” at the Saatchi Gallery in London this November.

Presenting three brand new bodies of work from November 18-December 2, “The Suggestionists” will showcase a previously unseen side of Hewlett, albeit one that is shot through with the same distinct sense of wit and mischief with which he has made his name in design and music. Linking Grindhouse-type film posters, detailed line drawings and Jodorowsky-inspired Tarotica, “The Suggestionists” is a gloriously psychogeographic journey into Hewlett’s psyche; one in which heterogeneous images of the conscious and unconscious, everyday and fantastical all occupy the same space.

Tarot’ will include ’22 larger than life Tarot cards’ while ‘Honey’ will explore ‘the deliciously sleazy ambiance of an adult cinema lobby.’ The final section ‘Pines’ will collect together large-scale ‘extraordinarily detailed illustrations of trees.’

Hewlett first rose to recognition with Tank Girl, a cult comic strip adapted into a film in 1995. Three years later, he conceptualized Gorillaz with Blur frontman Damon Albarn, kicking off a sensational run of music and accompanying visuals which became just as prominent as the band’s music.

Pre-exhibtion prints are currently available from Jamiehewlett.com.

Meanwhile on the Gorillaz front, project nucleus Damon Albarn has announced plans to begin recording new Gorillaz music this month.
