Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos Discusses “Very, Very, Very Expensive” Jeremy Clarkson Deal

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has spoken out regarding his company’s new deal with former Top Gear hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, which will see the trio host a new car show on the Amazon Prime Instant Video streaming service.

Speaking in today’s Sunday Telegraph, Bezos revealed that the deal to bring the presenters’ next show to his platform was unsurprisingly a “very, very, very expensive” one, though he didn’t elaborate any further on just how much money was exchanged, instead saying that the hosts are “worth a lot and they know it.”

“We have a lot of things in the pipeline, which I think viewers in the UK and around the world are going to love,” Bezos continued. “And I think Clarkson’s new show is going to be one of those.”

He added: “I think we’re in a golden age of television, so if you go back in time even just five years, you couldn’t get A-list talent to do TV serials, or, if you could, it was a rare thing. But that’s flipped completely.”

Though we know that Clarkson, Hammond and May will be fronting a new car show, its title has yet to be revealed and it’s unclear whether or not it will adopt a similar format to Top Gear. This could well be the case given that it’s been reported that BBC’s upcoming rebooted Top Gear show, which will be hosted by Chris Evans, will follow a panel show format similar to that of Have I Got News For You, leaving the door open for Clarkson to carry on where he left off before he was fired by the British Broadcasting Corporation.
