Wilco Surprise Fans With Free New Album ‘Star Wars’

There’s a new album from Wilco called Star Wars, and it’s entirely free. But if you need a little more incentive, and there’s a cat on the cover. This is the internet, so that has to count for something.

The download will cost you your email address, but hey, at least it’s not invading your iTunes library like a batch of Irish geezers.

In the band’s post announcing it, Jeff Tweedy says: “Why release an album this way and why make it free? Well, the biggest reason, and I’m not sure we even need any others, is that it felt like it would be fun. What’s more fun than a surprise?”

Good enough for us!

The 11-track album is named after George Lucas’ iconic film franchise, and marks Wilco’s first album since 2011’s The Whole Love. It’s their second LP on their own dBpm record label, and clocking in at just 33 minutes Star Wars is the shortest studio album in the Wilco catalog.

Star Wars will be available to download for free for the next 30 days through the Wilco site or the three major digital music stores (iTunes, Amazon, Google). The album will also be offered up for streaming via Apple Music, Rdio and Spotify. Have at it.
