The Internet Misses the Point and Asks “Why Would Adam Johnson Cheat On His Girlfriend?”

Sunderland winger and former England international Adam Johnson has been arrested for allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old girl, though football fans on Twitter are overlooking the rather serious crime Johnson has reportedly committed in favour of wondering why he’d cheat on his girlfriend, Stacey Flounders.

This is certainly not the most pressing issue in regards to this entire situation, but it’s the one that’s being thrown into question the most. “Why would Adam Johnson have sex with a 15-year-old when his girlfriend is so attractive?” the internet is repeatedly asking, its worldview apparently being thrown into question.

That’s not the only issue the internet is having with the alleged crime, however. Many are also going out of their way to harass a Twitter user who shares his name with the 27-year-old, with Adam Johnson from Liverpool being sent tweets such as “I hope you rot in hell you sick bastard,” “you’re a vile human being” and the far less cutting “absolutely shocking m8.” Johnson (the unaccused, non-footballer one) has tried his best to dissuade the vitriol coming his way, tweeting: “Christ… I’m getting tweets from strangers thinking I’m the footballer from sunderland.” Another Adam Johnson from Tennessee has also been on the receiving end of a barrage of misplaced hate-filled tweets, with this particular Johnson tweeting that he is “in no way affiliated with the soccer player of the same name.”

Then we have those prematurely defending Johnson, with Harvey Cooper tweeting: “I really feel for #adamjohnson if he met the girl in a nightclub and she’s told him she’s older,” conjuring up an event that has only happened within his own imagination. There are those touting the old “innocent until proven guilty” line, which is entirely fair given that Johnson remains in custody and he has yet to be charged with the crimes, and then there are those who have seemingly already concluded that Johnson isn’t at fault, with online tipster “King Frank” tweeting:  “If the girl went to an 18+ environment illegally, she should be the one punished and in jail. Young girls ruining lives.”

Again, thus far there is no information regarding where Johnson allegedly met the teenager, but apparently the internet has already decided that he definitely met her in a club she shouldn’t have been in, it’s definitely her fault and 15-year-old girls are the common enemy of men worldwide.

So in summary, we’ve learned that the internet is a mostly terrible place and we should stay away from it.
