It’s clear that Metallica are thrilled about their new song “Lords of Summer.” The metal titans have performed the song live and shared a “garage demo,”and now they’ve released a so-called “first pass” studio version.
Over eight minutes long, the track grinds slowly to life, with frontman James Hetfield calling to the ominous power of domination: “Are you remembering the sound/ Recall the shaking of the ground/ Crawling, crawling all as one/ Lords of Summer bring the sun.” As lead guitarist Kirk Hammett rips through 80s-era riffage, one can’t help but wonder what kind of music these cats would be making if they weren’t constantly being inundated with demands to bring back the sound of their first four albums.
