Forza Horizon 2 Will Ditch Forza 5’s Invasive Micro-Transactions

Forza Motorsport 5 launched last year to a lot of a praise, but it also was a target of hate by some gamers. An in-game currency called Tokens allowed players to use real money to unlock cars, serving as a shortcut of sorts. This system was made worse by the fact that in-game currency was awarded in small amounts, making the process of building a garage full of cars a painful grind. Lessons were learned in the process, and this year’s Forza refuses to follow the same design philosophy.

Playground Games Creative Director Ralph Fulton has confirmed to Digital Spy that there will be no tokens in Forza Horizon 2. Furthermore, all cars will have to be earned naturally.

In order to make sure players can acquire the cars that they want to own and race in, the amount of time required to obtain cars will be lowered dramatically. A post-launch patch for Forza 5 accomplished something with similar results which increased earnings, making the game feel a lot more rewarding than it did at launch. For some, it was too little too late, but it was a necessary move to make active players happy by responding to feedback.

Made better, a ‘Horizon Wheel Spin’ will appear upon leveling up, allowing players to frequently earn a random car. This, in addition to being able to purchase cars with earned currency, will fill up garages quickly.

This year’s Forza Horizon 2 is just one of four big racing games during the Fall season. If you’re into racing games, prepare for a wild ride.

Forza Horizon 2 will debut on September 30th for Xbox One and Xbox 360.
