1080p vs. 720p PS4 and Xbox One Debate “Shouldn’t Matter,” says Witcher 3 Dev

The ongoing resolution debate between PS4 and Xbox One owners shouldn’t matter, according to CD Projekt co-founder and The Witcher 3 developer Marcin Iwinski.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Iwinski noted that though the PS4 version may look slightly better than the Xbox One version, he believes that the differences between the two system’s hardware is made a larger issue than it need be.

Iwinski said: “It’s more of a PR differentiation, which is very important for Sony right now – and they are using it, obviously – than something that is really meaningful to gamers.

He continued: “We are still working on squeezing the juice out of the consoles and Microsoft are supporting us in this respect. The final effect, whether it’s 720p, 1080p – we had the debate in the studio about it and actually asked our tech guys to explain how it works, and they sent me some complicated graphs that ‘if I have this size of the screen, and I sit one meter or two meters from it, then I might be able to see the difference’.”

The PS4’s superior technical capabilities have served Sony well thus far, with the Xbox One’s failure to hit native 1080p on a number of its major titles, including Titanfall, proving to be a huge selling point for the Japanese hardware manufacturer. This has made the PS4 the system of choice for multiplatform titles, due to the more graphically superior versions of games appearing on the hardware.

However, the Xbox team plans to have their games consistently hitting that 1080p mark in the near future, with the upcoming Wolfenstein: The New Order being an example of a game that will run at 1080p/60fps on the Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is set to release on the PS4, Xbox One and PC in February 2015.
