Early Wednesday morning, producer extraordinaire and man of a thousand projects Pharrell announced that his sophomore solo album, G I R L, will be released on March 3rd through Columbia Records. It’ll be the N.E.R.D. and Neptunes nucleus’ first solo release since 2006’s In My Mind, but the word “solo” is a very loose term in this case; Justin Timberlake, Daft Punk, Alicia Keys, Miley Cyrus and others will lend their talents to the album, which is available for pre-order on iTunes.
The 11-track release is led by the chart-topping single “Happy,” which is #1 on iTunes right now and #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Pharrell, clearly an ageless vampire, is enjoying a new streak of high-profile success thanks to his involvement in Daft Punk’s latest record Random Access Memories, specifically the Grammy-winning smash single “Get Lucky”. He also produced Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines, the year’s strongest-selling single, while his current single Happy has been in the top 3 for 13 weeks.
In a statement, Pharrell said: “When Columbia Records presented me with the opportunity to make an album, three things came to mind. One was the sense of overwhelming honor that I felt when I realized that they were interested in partnering with me on the album that I had always dreamt of making. Two, it would have to feel festive and urgent. And three, I instantly knew it would be called G I R L. I hope you like it.”
The production superstar expressed his inspiration by all the women that joined him in the studio during the recording process. “I can tell you is that me and all of the ladies that were all a part of the process and coming around to the studio listening to things, we all had a ball and we just want to share that with the rest of the world,” he said. “I am just ready to go. We appreciate it and work really hard on it.”
