Australia’s run of disastrous hip hop tours looks to be headed for a turnaround as mini-festival Rap City returns for a third instalment headlined by Talib Kweli.
The often politically-inspired Kweli has made a name for himself over the span of a near 20-year career and recently released his fifth solo album, Prisoner Of Conscious, which features the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Bust Rhymes, and Miguel as well as production work from Rza, J. Cole, Oh No, among others.
Joined by the likes of Homeboy Sandman and Trademark Da Skywriter, Rap City will reach Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Sydney in early October.
Rap City intends to do what a number of other tours have failed to do in recent times- put on a quality Australian show.
Australian fans have already seen the cancellations of the Nas-led Movement festival, a postponed Supafest (50 Cent, T.I, Akon, NE-YO), the last minute cancellation of regional rap festival Urban Vibe (Soulja Boy and J-Kwon, Scribe) to name a few.
More importantly, Rap City focus is focusing on bringing the true essence of hip hop to Australian soil. Recent past performers have included Gang Starr’s DJ Premier, Beatnuts and Masta Ace on the bill. AWOL in 2011, Rap City returned last year featuring Ghostface Killah, DOOM and Wu-Tang Clan associate Killah Priest.
“The idea is a boutique concept event with merchandise, visuals and quality hip-hop acts so if we can maintain that focus we will grow it when and where we can,” said promoter Trent Roden in an interview with FasterLouder. “We are happy to continue the brand and excited to see where it can lead in the future for us.”
