It is maddening to have another driver cut you off at an intersection, especially since this kind of incident can easily cause road rage but it usually doesn’t get punished since law enforcement isn’t around to see it. But one driver found out the hard way what happens when they dangerously turned right on a red light and then performed a brake check, all without noticing the cop car right behind them. A dashcam captured the entire thing on video, and as one user says, it’s very “satisfying” to watch.
Driver gets caught doing a dangerous break check by the police
The full incident was caught in a 29-second video in a post on the Reddit r/dashcams by user SoShiaReef with the title “It was close to becoming a full-blown road rage incident.”
Dashcam footage from the black vehicle shows the vehicle driving in the rightmost lane of a major road and moving at a steady rate of speed as it goes through an intersection. For the first few seconds, it looks like nothing out of place is going to happen.
That’s when the driver of a white sedan, which appears to be a Subaru, decides to inch forward toward the red light and turn right onto the road ahead of the black vehicle. If we’re being generous, since the video doesn’t say what state the footage is from, we’ll assume that the there is no red arrow stopping on the white sedan’s side; if there was, it would have meant that the driver would not be allowed to turn on red. That said, even if the driver was allowed to turn there, it’s still necessary to do so when it is safe, and the black truck is seen moving fast enough that the timing for a right turn on red would be tight to make.
After the white sedan pulls into the left lane, the driver of the black vehicle honks the horn in retaliation. The incident could have ended there, but the white sedan is then seen swerving into the right lane and performing a dangerous brake check. The passenger in the POV vehicle is heard saying “Oh, now he’s gonna—,” as if anticipating the brake check ahead of time.
Frustrated at the escalation, the passenger asks the driver, “Are you filming that?” The driver confirms that he is, as the passenger shouts, “Camera!”
Fortunately, a police patrol car is seen coming right behind the white sedan in the left lane, causing the driver of the black car to deescalate: “No, let him handle it.”
Within seconds, having caught the white sedan doing a brake check, the cop turns on the red and blue signal lights. The video then ends with the passenger laughing as the driver of the white sedan gets instant karma for their actions.
Actually, some commenters think both drivers are at fault
The vast majority of commenters on the Reddit thread found the dashcam video to be delightful. One of the top comments wrote, “Every bit of that was satisfying.” And another said, “That laugh at the end…”
However, several users thought that the situation could have handled better by both parties. Some said that the POV driver should have slowed down and reacted defensively, instead of accelerating toward the white sedan to close the gap and then honking the horn to try and prove a point.
One comment said, “Unpopular opinion, the black car POV/driver honking was “extra”. The white car got out of the way and in no way impeded them.”
However, others pointed out that it is the responsibility of the driver for the white sedan to yield to oncoming traffic when turning right on red and should have waited to turn at a better spot. And it’s difficult to get away with a brake check like that when it’s done right in front of the cops.
