As the saying goes, a love triangle is way too crowded, especially when it involves accusations of infidelity. A woman in Florida suspected that her boyfriend was cheating on her and decided to track him. She didn’t know what she would find at his location, but once she found him with another woman in his truck, she decided to take matters into her own hands. And now she’s charged with attempted murder.
Girlfriend suspects partner of infidelity and allegedly followed him in an Uber
On October 24 past midnight, 24-year-old Katherine Dale Kelly of Cocoa, Florida, was arrested by deputies from the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office and charged with attempted first-degree murder after shooting a female victim in a vehicle driven by her boyfriend, according to a report by The Tampa Free Press and Space Coast Daily.
A spokesman for the sheriff’s department says the incident started when Kelly’s boyfriend, Elijah Baker, picked up another woman, Angel Adenau, at around 1:20 a.m. To make matters worse, he had driven a Volkswagen owned by Kelly and had taken the car without her permission, per Florida Today. After picking Adenau up, Baker then drove to a residence on Bamboo Avenue in the Port St. John area and parked the vehicle in a grassy field.
Unbeknownst to him, Kelly had suspected her boyfriend of cheating, according to an arrest affidavit. She followed her instincts and tracked Baker’s location, choosing to reach his location by taking an Uber and directing the driver to the Volkswagen.
After Kelly was dropped off, she approached the vehicle while holding a pink-and-black Glock handgun from her purse. She walked toward the passenger side of the car where Adenau was sitting and fired a single round that went through the window. The bullet from the pistol struck the victim in the left shoulder.
Baker quickly fled the scene with Adenau, heading to the victim’s home where other residents were woken up and emergency responders were called. After they arrived, Adenau was transported to the Holmes Regional Medical Center for medical treatment. Baker was not at the residence when first responders arrived, having instead returned to the scene of the crime to pick up Kelly and drive her home.
Later that night, Baker sent a text to Kelly saying that he loved her and apologized for the incident.
As part of the investigation, law enforcement say they recovered the Glock handgun and a 9mm shell casing. Deputies also found evidence on Baker’s phone with text messages that accused him of infidelity. They also found a text from Kelly where she had threatened to shoot someone because of it.
Kelly attempted to tell a different tale when she was initially interviewed by detectives. At first, she said she acted in self-defense, positioning herself as the victim in the situation. But it didn’t take long before she admitted to shooting Adenau to “make a point” and believed that Baker was cheating on her again. When asked by detectives whether she felt guilty for shooting Adenau, Kelly told the police that she believed in “karma” and believed that Adenau should have known that Baker already had a partner.
As noted by inmate search records, Katherine Dale Kelly was booked at 6:25 p.m. and held at the Brevard County Jail. She faces several serious charges, including attempted first-degree murder with a firearm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, use of a firearm during the commission of a crime, and shooting into an occupied vehicle. At the time of writing, no bond has been set.
Baker has not been charged with a crime.
Kelly is expected to appear in court on November 24 before Judge David Koenig.
