Smile 2 is coming to Netflix in September
Horror fans won’t have to wait much longer to revisit one of 2024’s most talked-about supernatural thrillers. Smile 2 arrives on Netflix on September 3, bringing Parker Finn’s follow-up to a much wider streaming audience after a successful theatrical run (via What’s on Netflix).
The sequel shifts the franchise away from its original lead and follows global pop star Skye Riley, played by Naomi Scott, as a sinister curse begins tearing apart both her career and her grip on reality.
Rather than simply repeating the first film’s formula, the sequel places psychological horror inside the pressure cooker of celebrity life. As Skye prepares for a world tour, terrifying visions force her to confront buried trauma before the supernatural force consumes everything around her. Parker Finn returned as writer and director, while Rosemarie DeWitt, Lukas Gage and Ray Nicholson joined Scott in the main cast.
The movie also delivered where it mattered most: the box office. Produced on an estimated $28 million budget, the sequel earned more than $138 million worldwide. Critics and audiences largely also welcomed the follow-up.
The film holds an 86% critics’ score and an 81% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, while IMDb users rate it 6.7/10. Reviewers especially praised Naomi Scott’s emotionally intense performance, with many calling it the driving force behind the film’s unsettling atmosphere. Horror fans also appreciated how the sequel expanded the mythology instead of relying solely on familiar jump scares.
The original Smile became a surprise phenomenon in 2022 after earning more than $217 million worldwide from a modest budget, paving the way for this sequel. Many viewers felt the follow-up matched, or even surpassed, the first film by fusing psychological tension with larger-scale set pieces and a deeper look at the curse’s impact.
Now, with its Netflix debut around the corner, Smile 2 is ready to find an entirely new audience.
