Man Uses Mini Donuts Against a Deputy During Police Chase

It’s a cliché that police officers like donuts, but that’s not a good reason to fling a bag of donuts at them during an arrest. A 59-year-old man in Missouri was chased by police after being caught for speeding and his vehicle was brought to a halt, but he tried to resist arrest by hitting a deputy with a bag of mini donuts. That didn’t work, of course.

Suspect arrested for attempting to stab a deputy with a box cutter

According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Scott Adkins (not to be confused by the actor and martial artist) was caught speeding and changing lanes without signaling on Interstate 435 at around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 12. Further investigation by dispatchers revealed that the car’s license plate was registered to a different vehicle.

Deputies attempted to pull the suspect over, but he fled Missouri State Highway Patrol and sped down the highway, at one point hitting a yield sign and a tree. A trooper was able to bring the car to a stop using a tactical vehicle intervention.

Law enforcement ordered Adkins to exit the vehicle, but he refused and said that police would have to kill him before he would be arrested. While the suspect looked at his phone, a deputy broke a window of the vehicle in an attempt to extract him from the vehicle. That’s when the man swung a bag of mini donuts at the deputy and tried slicing him with a box cutter.

While the deputy dodged the weapon attack, police backed away and restarted negotiations. The suspect then began “drifting in and out of consciousness” before “he started stabbing himself in the abdomen.”

That’s when another deputy successfully used a taser against the suspect. He was then removed from the vehicle and transported safely to a hospital by ambulance. The man suffered superficial wounds from the self-inflicted cuts and is now in custody at the Clay County Detention Center. Deputies discovered a total of six box cutters in the suspect’s vehicle.

Adkins has been charged with second-degree assault on law enforcement, armed criminal action, and aggravated fleeing from law enforcement. Police suspect that his erratic behavior could be caused by narcotics.
