Michael Weatherly is coming back to what built his career. CBS confirmed the casting news on Wednesday, bringing a beloved star back into the fold after his NCIS spinoff was unexpectedly axed.
Michael Weatherly’s Tony DiNozzo returns for season-long arc in NCIS
Fans last saw Weatherly leave the flagship drama as a series regular in 2016. He played Anthony DiNozzo for 13 seasons, crafting one of television’s most enduring characters. Now the network wants him back in the squad room. The deal will have Michael Weatherly in a season-long arc on NCIS.
The timing aligns with a broader strategy. Mark Harmon just locked in his own extended stint on the prequel NCIS: Origins, which CBS announced a day earlier. By re-enlisting two foundational stars, the franchise might be making a deliberate pivot toward its roots.
Michael Weatherly’s return to NCIS follows a turbulent time. He and original cast member Cote de Pablo reunited in 2025 for NCIS: Tony & Ziva, a Paramount+ series. Despite fervent fan support, the streaming platform canceled the project in December, shocking its audience.
Weatherly and de Pablo addressed the cancellation with a joint statement. “We feel incredibly lucky to have had the chance to play these characters once again and to tell the next chapter of Tony and Ziva’s story,” they said. “Our deepest thanks go to our extraordinary cast, crew, writers, directors, and producers, and to our partners at CBS Studios and Paramount+ who helped make this dream a reality.”
The writers now face a tricky challenge. The spinoff left Tony and Ziva together, raising a daughter and navigating life as fugitives. Explaining his solo reappearance on NCIS will demand careful plotting. CBS has not hinted at any involvement from de Pablo, leaving DiNozzo’s return possibly related to the core team.
Season 24 gathers the current ensemble. Sean Murray, Wilmer Valderrama, Brian Dietzen, Diona Reasonover, Katrina Law, and Gary Cole all reprise their roles when the series returns this fall.
