Godzilla vs. Kong

‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ Getting Sequel (Spoiler: They Hug It Out This Time, Naked)

Godzilla vs. Kong may have come out just last year, but Legendary’s dynamic duo is poised to kiss and make-up in a new sequel. That’s right all you Monster-verse heads, the battle between Godzilla and Kong is set to continue in a sequel. Will the two titans just hug it out this time and become best buds? We’ll find out sooner rather than later, as the untitled sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong is set to begin filming in Australia later this year.

Naturally, details are still under wraps, to the point where we don’t even know who is directing the fifth film in Legendary’s self-proclaimed Monster-verse. Last year, however, Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard mentioned to Deadline last year that he would “absolutely love to continue” working on the franchise.

Interestingly enough, Wingard also hinted at the potential direction for a possible sequel at the time. “The clear starting point we teed up (in GVK), exploring Hollow Earth, I think there is a lot more to do there. This is a pre-history of Planet Earth, where all the titans come from. We tee up some mystery in this film, things I want to see resolved and explored and pushed to the next level. So there you have it.

Godzilla vs. Kong was many things, but the inclusion of the Hollow Earth stuff was easily one of the dumbest things of that movie. Now, all indications suggest that the sequel will be leaning into the conspiracy elements even more. It’s true that just about every notable monster movie has some sort of conspiracy angle that is naturally inherent to a giant monster story. Nothing is confirmed at this point, but the idea of utilizing fringe conspiracy theories to justify your story is shaky at best. Time will tell, but let’s hope that Godzilla and Kong can just figure out a way to get along.
