Lightyear

‘Lightyear’ Is Not at All the Toy Story You Were Hoping For, But It May Be The One We Deserve (Or Horridly Worse)

Spring is on the horizon, which means that Hollywood is already thinking about the summer movie season. Such is the case with the first trailer for Lightyear, Pixar’s Buzz Lightyear origin story. Although the film has been teased in the past, this is our first true look at the Toy Story spinoff. As the latest trailer indicates, this may not be the kind of Toy Story that we were hoping for, but rather the one we didn’t think we deserved.

Interestingly, the film is not based on the Buzz Lightyear from the films, but rather the “real-life” character that inspired the toy. Taking the meta nature of this even further, Lightyear seems to be the big-budget film biopic of the man who became a pop culture phenomenon. Wait, is this movie a premature remake of The Matrix: Resurrections?

As you can see, the smartest decision the filmmakers could have made was casting Chris Evans, aka the high-rent Chris Pratt, as Buzz. The trailer also provides our first look at the fictionalized version of Emporer Zerg, which looks incredible. Then there’s the use of David Bowie’s “Starman,” which is about a great of a music choice as you can get.

Even though the movie holds its cards close to the chest in terms of plot, there’s also the potential for Toy Story die-hards to have a Last Jedi-level reaction to this one. Perhaps not, but people who grew up with these films may not like the meta approach to the material. Either way, if there isn’t some sort of post-credits tie-in to Andy, we will surely be disappointed. After all, isn’t that the point?

Lightyear lands in theaters on June 17, 2022
