Star Wars Episode IX Gets a New Writer

If there’s one thing Star Wars desperately needs, it’s new voices. And they’re about to get one.

Jack Thorne has just been enlisted to rewrite the screenplay to Star Wars: Episode IX, the third film in the new Star Wars trilogy, which began with The Force Awakens and will continue later this year with The Last Jedi. The untitled film will be directed by Colin Trevorrow, whose Jurassic World is one of the most financially successful movies in history, and whose recent film The Book of Henry is one of the worst films of 2017. Hollywood Reporter broke the story.

Plot details about the upcoming film are scarcer than usual due to Disney’s completely opaque shroud of total secrecy about their recently acquired Star Wars franchise. Colin Trevorrow wrote the first draft of the Star Wars: Episode IX screenplay with Derek Connolly, his collaborator on Safety Not Guaranteed and Jurassic World.

Jack Thorne may not be a household name but he has been a prolific screenwriter in Britain for many years, contributing to the hit television series Skins and the romantic comedy A Long Way Down, and creating the short-lived heist series The Last Panthers, starring Samantha Morton and John Hurt.

Production begins on Star Wars: Episode IX in January 2018. The film is due in theaters on May 24, 2019.
