No, Spider-Man PS4 Isn’t Confirmed to Release This Year

Earlier today it was reported by various outlets that Insomniac’s Spider-Man PS4 game would be released this year, due to comments made by Marvel Digital Media’s vice president Ryan Penagos.

During a live stream captured by Reddit user GamingSince95, Penagos was discussing the Marvel games being released in the near future and said: “There’s even more on the horizon for 2017 like Spider-Man coming to PlayStation 4 and Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite coming to Xbox One, PS4, and PC.” With the release date for the game having thus far been unconfirmed, and the lack of footage we’ve received thus far seeming to suggest that the game would be released in 2018 at the earliest, many were surprised by this new development.

However, it has now transpired that Penagos had been mistaken, with developer Insomniac Games revealing that Spider-Man still has no confirmed release window, and that it isn’t set to launch this year after all. Insomniac took to Twitter to dispel the speculation, posting the following tweet:

Spider-Man was announced for the PS4 during Sony’s E3 2016 presentation, but we’ve received little new information regarding the game since then. The game, which will be an original story featuring the web-slinger, will take place in an open world version of New York. Though it has yet to receive an official release date, many have speculated that it may still release this year in order to capitalize on the release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Marvel’s latest movie reboot of the character.
