Seyfried, 40, played herself in the A24 documentary while also portraying Holmes in dramatized sequences. She had previously taken on the same role in the television series The Dropout.
During an appearance on The Kyle Buchanan Show, Simons discussed the actress’s performance and explained why he considered it worthy of Oscar recognition.
The Nobody Wants This actor specifically highlighted a scene recreating Nathan Fielder’s visit to Holmes in jail.
He recalled how Seyfried’s performance made him feel as though he was watching Holmes rather than an actress portraying her.
Simons said he experienced that feeling both times he watched the film. It was particularly evident during a moment when Seyfried’s character embraced Fielder.
He also discussed the documentary’s unusual combination of real footage and recreated scenes.
According to Simons, the transition between footage of Fielder approaching the jail and the staged interior demonstrated how the film incorporated traditional dramatic storytelling techniques.
Although he acknowledged that the documentary format raised questions about Oscar eligibility, Simons maintained that Seyfried delivered an exceptional performance.
The actor admitted that he did not fully understand the Academy’s rules. He also said he would consider voting for her based on what he had watched.
Host Kyle Buchanan then suggested that Seyfried could qualify for an Academy Award nomination, based on his understanding of the rules.
The discussion subsequently reached Seyfried when the podcast shared a clip of Simons’ comments on Instagram.
According to Just Jared, the actress responded in the comments with a brief message expressing her appreciation.

“TIMOTHY,” she wrote, followed by two heart-eyes emojis.
Meanwhile, the Oscar buzz surrounding Amanda Seyfried also gained attention because A24 reportedly planned a Best Supporting Actress campaign for her performance.
However, the available information does not confirm whether the Academy has officially determined her eligibility or whether she will receive a nomination.
For now, Seyfried’s reaction showed her appreciation for Simons’ praise as the conversation surrounding her documentary performance continued.
