Cher’s representative reached out to Entertainment Weekly to address Michael Douglas’ remarks about the Oscars and Glenn Close. The representative said, “Cher adores Michael Douglas.” Michael Douglas appeared on The Graham Norton Show alongside Fatal Attraction co-star Glenn Close.

Douglas expressed his shock about Cher taking over Close for the 1988 Oscar ceremony. However, Close scolded Douglas for the comment.

Douglas said, “She should have won with Fatal Attraction.” The remarks came days before Close is set to receive her first Honorary Award from the Academy after her eight career nominations.

Douglas commented that Close “was nominated, I believe, [for] her fourth” since 1983 during her 1988 nominations. While Norton exclaimed, “Oh, nice,” Douglas added that Cher won an Oscar that year by a close margin. He said, “I know, that’s what we all said.”

Close immediately interrupted him, saying, “Michael, be kind!” Cher won an Oscar for  Moonstruck that year instead of Close.

Douglas won an Oscar for his 1987 film Wall Street. However, Fatal Attraction had been nominated for six categories, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress for Anne Archer, Best Director for Adrian Lyne, and more. None of these nominations were won by the film.

Douglas added, “Everybody thought that Glenn was not right for the part, and so we moved on, and her agent called and said, ‘You don’t understand, Glenn will audition.”

The actor also shared that he and the Fatal Attraction team initially thought Glenn Close was not the right person to play Alex Forrest, a woman who enacts revenge on a married man. His comments brought renewed attention to Glenn Close’s Oscar history and debate surrounding the performances that year.
