A stage musical celebrating George Michael‘s life and career is reportedly moving forward, with producers eyeing a Broadway debut.
The late singer’s longtime friend, David Austin, confirmed that plans were underway, with the production reportedly already being workshopped in New York.

Austin discussed the proposed musical during the London premiere of the concert film George Michael: The Faith Tour at the BFI IMAX.
“There is talk about Broadway. We’ve got our fingers in a lot of pies,” he told The Sun.
His remarks followed reports that the singer’s sister, Yioda Panayiotou, had held private talks with theater producers.
The plans first surfaced in April 2026, when insiders described the project as being in the early stages of development.
Instead of using his songs to tell a fictional story, the production will reportedly explore his personal life and musical career.
The project has also reportedly attracted interest from experienced theater professionals. Seven-time Olivier Award nominee Maria Friedman is reportedly in talks to direct the musical.
While Broadway remains the main goal, the team reportedly hopes to bring the musical to London’s West End if it proves successful.
However, Austin did not announce a theater, cast, or premiere date.
The singer rose to fame in the 1980s as one half of Wham! alongside Andrew Ridgeley. He later became one of the best-selling recording artists of all time.
The singer died at his home in Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, on Christmas Day in 2016. He was 53.
The planned musical could introduce his remarkable career and personal story to a new generation of theatergoers.
