Ant-Man’s Evangeline Lilly Walked Away From Hollywood Over One Thing She ‘Hated’

Speaking to the Christian Broadcasting Network in an interview published on October 19, Lilly said she did not know what the “consequences” of leaving Hollywood would be. She acknowledged feeling afraid at times. Her decision meant letting go of the “power, influence, and potential money” that came with her career.

Lilly gained recognition for playing Kate Austen in ABC’s popular drama series Lost. She starred in the show throughout its six-season run from 2004 to 2010. The Golden Globe-nominated actress also appeared in major blockbuster franchises, including The Hobbit. She announced her retirement from acting in 2024.

“When you’re successful at something, it feels really good when the world says, ‘We love you! You’re amazing!’ Like, this is a wonderful feeling. How do you walk away from that? And I’ve had moments of … gripping fear of like, ‘What am I doing?’ But, ultimately, the decision was one that was made in great conviction,” she explained.

Lilly further stated, “I wanted to make the world a better place. And there are many people who will claim that actors are making the world a better place, that they’ve had an impact on their lives. But…I’ve always wanted a much more hands-on impact. I’ve done 22 years of hands-on humanitarian work in Rwanda.”

Lilly had different career plans before becoming an actress. She studied political science and international relations and considered becoming a missionary, humanitarian, or diplomat.

Lilly said she would much rather live a quieter life, admitting that she had “always hated being famous.” The actress explained that she viewed fame as the price actors had to pay for the wealth their careers could bring.
