Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor have been together for more than a decade. However, the longtime couple still has not taken one conventional relationship step: living together full time. Their separate-home setup is intentional, although their current arrangement means they actually spend plenty of time under the same roof. Taylor has now explained how work, geography, and their individual homes factor into the relationship.
Holland Taylor explains why the couple has avoided a traditional living arrangement
Taylor discussed the couple’s living situation during an Oct. 20 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show. She explained that their careers frequently pull them in different directions. “We do as much time as we possibly can, because work takes us apart constantly,” Taylor said, according to Page Six.
In New York, Paulson stays at Taylor’s apartment whenever she is in the city. If their schedules overlap there, the pair stays together.
Their Los Angeles arrangement is a little different. Both women have their own properties, but Paulson has reportedly not moved into the new house she purchased. Instead, she has spent nearly a year staying at Taylor’s home, according to PinkNews.
Taylor said they are ultimately together “as much as geography and our jobs let us be.” Therefore, maintaining separate homes does not necessarily mean the couple spends significant time apart.
Paulson has also previously suggested that not living together works well for their relationship. During a 2024 appearance on the SmartLess podcast, she joked that keeping separate homes was “the secret” to making things work.
Meanwhile, Paulson continues to stay busy professionally. The actress recently shared some strong opinions about her years on American Horror Story, including ranking Roanoke last among her seasons.
Paulson and Taylor first met in 2005 before reconnecting years later. They began dating in 2015 and have since remained open about choosing a relationship structure that works for them rather than following a traditional timeline.
