Bill Maher is preparing to meet Donald Trump again after their first dinner sparked public controversy. The comedian revealed the plans during a recent episode of his podcast. He also addressed criticism from people who question his willingness to engage with the president.
Bill Maher announced his second planned dinner with Donald Trump on Club Random
Maher shared the news during Monday’s episode of Club Random. Speaking with billionaire entertainment executive Ari Emanuel, he confirmed another dinner was approaching. “I’m having dinner with him again next week, by the way,” Maher revealed.
The upcoming meeting follows their first private dinner at the White House in March 2025. Maher later described Trump as “gracious and measured” during their conversation. However, the president subsequently criticized the comedian publicly on social media.
According to Maher, Trump contacted him unexpectedly to arrange the next meeting. The comedian said the president called him “out of the blue.” Maher recalled being pleased by the invitation despite their earlier fallout.
“I was like, great!” Maher recalled. He said Trump promised not to criticize him as he had previously. Maher responded, “You’re the president of the United States, say whatever the fuck you want.”
Maher also explained why he remains willing to speak privately with Trump. “I’m just glad we’re talking,” he said, acknowledging the president’s communication style. He argued that conversation does not require abandoning criticism.
The comedian addressed people who believe meeting Trump amounts to humanizing him. He questioned why critics, particularly those on the far left, would reject such an opportunity. “A private dinner in the White House with the president, just a few people,” Maher told Emanuel. “Say whatever you want.”
Maher added that meeting Trump offers an opportunity to challenge him directly. “There’s a way to talk to Donald Trump,” he argued. He also acknowledged the president’s shortcomings, describing him as “very flawed.”
Their first dinner drew criticism from comedian Larry David, among others. Maher has maintained that private conversations can coexist with public disagreement. His second planned meeting is likely to renew debate over that approach.
The Real Time host has also publicly criticized Trump on various issues. His willingness to meet the president again highlights his preference for direct engagement. Whether the dinner changes, their relationship remains to be seen.
