James McAvoy’s lungs collapsed while he was home alone, just two days after the procedure
James McAvoy appeared on the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepherd, where he recalled a devastating experience.
He said, “I had a lung puncture because they needed to test, so they saw a shadow in my lung. So they wanted to biopsy it to see if it was cancer, which it wasn’t, which was great. But that was botched, and I nearly died. Cuz you got an infection.”
McAvoy recalled that he was home alone two days later when his lungs collapsed while he was in bed.
He said, “I was on my own as well. So it was crazy. I spent like two or three weeks in hospital. They eventually tried everything to clean out. Nothing was working. So they were like, ‘We’re going to need to cut you open big style. Go in with, like, soapy, like dish soap basically and just to clean you out. Scoop it all up.’” (via Us Weekly)
Following his recovery, McAvoy worked hard to prepare for his role in Glass.
Reflecting on his physical preparation, McAvoy said, “Unlike Split, I was the Beast [for] most of the movie, and I was just outside in broad daylight as well. So I was like, ‘I’m really going to need to do the real thing. I’m going to need to go for it.’ I remember saying, like, ‘You’re going to get me a trainer.’ … I’m going to need somebody that can make [me] look like a Greek f***ing figure from mythology.”
He previously shared his experience in Men’s Journal in 2019, saying that health scare made him reconsider the type of roles he would take in the future.
