In the October 8 episode of the Fox competition series, Alexia opened up about the assault. She said, as quoted by Us Weekly, “Seven years ago, I was on a trip with some friends, and I was with people I trust. I was put to bed because I had a little too much to drink. And I woke up, and I could tell something had happened.” She described feeling powerless during the assault, recalling that she “didn’t even have the power or consciousness to say no.”
She said, “I felt completely objectified, and I had a lot of pain and anger for that. At the one-year mark, I decided that happiness is a choice and I was going to choose to put it away, but it still hurts.”
She further discussed how she has dealt with the experience in the years that followed. “I was taken advantage of. My family — to this day — does not know. When you bring other people into it, it just becomes more of a conversation. And maybe a conversation is what I needed. But I just wasn’t ready.”
Alexia eventually found the courage to tell her father about the assault. She explained that she had never wanted her parents to find out about the incident because she had been trying to protect them from the painful truth.
Alexia also reassured Mauricio that she had made progress in dealing with the emotional impact of the experience. She said she had “definitely healed” and had “come a long way since then.”
