Nicole Kidman says marrying Tom Cruise at 22 ‘seemed completely natural’ to her
Nicole Kidman recently spoke with British Vogue and reflected on her marriage to Tom Cruise, saying she felt marrying him at 22 was completely natural at the time.
Kidman said, “You have to remember literally, because of who I married at such a young age, I was thrust into it since I was 22. [My life has been] more time like that than not. My memory of it not being that is quite blurry, because I was really young.”
“Suddenly I was 22, 23 years old and I had this huge movie star husband. But it just seemed completely natural. We just fell madly in love and it was that simple,” she added
During the interview, Kidman also recalled being warned that marrying Cruise so young could affect her career. She said she dismissed those concerns because she was in love.
Nicole said, “I remember people saying to me, ‘OK, well this is really going to affect your career. I’m like, ‘I don’t care. I’m in love. I want to be married.’” She added, “And then I was his ‘wife’ and they were like, ‘See, we told you.’ I’m like, ‘So what? I wasn’t meant to marry the man I love? Of course I’ll throw my career away. I don’t care.”
Cruise and Kidman married on Christmas Eve in 1990 after meeting on the set of Days of Thunder. Kidman was in her early 20s, while Cruise was 28. During their marriage, the couple adopted two children, daughter Isabella Jane, born in 1992, and son Connor Antony, born in 1995.
However, their relationship eventually ended due to differences. Cruise filed for divorce in February 2001, and the court finalized their divorce in August of the same year.
