During her appearance on the August 11 episode of Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, O’Donnell praised Nixon, calling her “the real deal” and “one of the best actresses that we have.” Poehler then asked O’Donnell about filming their intimate scene, noting how vulnerable her character was during the experience. She asked O’Donnell what it was like to film the bed scene with Nixon.
To which the Emmy-winning daytime talk show host said, “It was horrifying to me because I was so nervous.” She then continued by saying, “First of all, I love her. I love her and have so much respect for her. And she called me, and she’s like, ‘Ro, you know, Michael Patrick [King] wrote you a scene, and it’s with me. Will you do it?’ I said, ‘Of course I’ll do it with you.’ You know, and then I read it, and I’m like in bed with just the sheets, and then I’m like, ‘Oh my god.'”
As per People, O’Donnell appeared in the first episode of the show’s third and final season. She portrayed Sister Mary, a nun visiting New York City, who meets Miranda Hobbes, played by Nixon, at a lesbian bar. The character later breaks her vow of chastity and loses her virginity to Miranda.
O’Donnell told Poehler, “The kissing wasn’t hard, but the laying in bed and the wanting us to act like we had just done it. I was like ugh. But you know, I’m a little immature when it comes to that.” She also mentioned that her only other on-screen sex scene was with the late Julian McMahon. She filmed the scene while guest-starring on the FX drama Nip/Tuck. She said the actor was “such a gentleman.” The actor died in July 2025 after privately battling cancer. He was 56.
