“The Odyssey” director Christopher Nolan has said that all the backlash around his upcoming movie is irrelevant since they are opinions of people who have not seen the movie yet. Nolan remained unfazed because he had experienced it all during his The Batman years.
Christopher Nolan dismisses growing debate over The Odyssey casting as “irrelevant”
According to People, Nolan addressed the controversy with The Telegraph and explained that criticism “comes with the territory.” He added, “But look, these conversations that happen before people see the film – they’re always irrelevant, because no one having them knows what the film actually is yet.”
The adaptation has faced criticism online over several casting decisions, including racist reactions to Lupita Nyong’o’s role as Helen of Troy and discussion surrounding the casting of Elliot Page. People reported that earlier speculation incorrectly claimed Page had been cast as Achilles, when he actually portrays the Greek warrior Sinon.
Nolan claimed that he had previous experience with such situations. “But remember, I spent 10 years of my life dealing with Batman,” he added. “When I came on to Batman Begins, writers and artists had been working on this beloved character for almost 65 years, and a lot of freighted thoughts were out there about what he represents. And what I learnt over my time on that trilogy is you can’t worry about any of that at all. What you have to do is honor the original text by interpreting it in the strongest way you personally can.”
Nolan became popular after directing three Batman movies with the titular character being played by Christian Bale. His 2008 entry, “The Dark Knight,” attracted ridicule for casting Heath Ledger, who was a romantic hero at that time. His performance ultimately became one of the most acclaimed of the century.
The Odyssey stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, alongside Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, and an ensemble cast. The film is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 17.
