Kathy Griffin took to Instagram to clear the air about a post that generated heavy backlash from her fans and followers.
The said post had raised speculation about whether Griffin was dating a man 43 years her junior, while the latter reconciled this issue.
Kathy Griffin explained that the 22-year-old was part of her security team and not her boyfriend
According to Blast, Griffin has finally gotten back on her post showing her and a young man. The post was captioned, “He’s 22. Have at it, internet.” After being bombarded by reactions, Griffin has revealed that it was just a “sociological experiment” that she was conducting. The man in the photo is, in fact, not her romantic partner. He was, rather, helping her with security during her trip to NYC.
Griffin begins the post with a lighthearted approach, saying, “You guys! Thanks to all those who participated in my social media sociological experiment,” adding, “No, I am not dating this 22-year-old.”
The comedian said she found the responses across social media platforms particularly revealing. According to Griffin, Instagram users were largely supportive of the apparent relationship, while comments on Threads were dominated by criticism, slut-shaming and complaints about the 43-year age gap.
She also spoke about the selective ageism in the world and the entertainment industry. The hypocrisy was stark as older male celebrities are never vilified for having relationships with younger women. She said, “Just ask Luke Wilson, 54, who just had a beautiful baby with his 24-year-old girlfriend.”
She cited Harrison Ford and Calista Flockhart, as well as Jay-Z and Beyoncé, as couples who are successfully in an age-gap relationship amid the “ageist and sexist” industry.
Griffin ended the discussion by urging followers not to take the post too seriously, writing, “Relax… just a little harmless fun with you guys with an IG post.”
While the whole stance of the post was to take it lightly, Griffin’s argument harped on key social problems that go beyond the little fun she was having online.
DO YOU THINK GRIFFIN TOUCHED SOME BURNING ISSUES?
