Taylor Swift’s rumored wedding plans are reportedly drawing criticism before guests have even arrived. According to a new report, it’s not the celebrity-filled guest list causing concern; it’s the possibility of major street closures around Madison Square Garden.
Rumors continue to swirl that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce will tie the knot in New York City over the July Fourth weekend. While neither star has confirmed the plans, reports about permit applications and possible traffic disruptions are already sparking debate among New Yorkers.
Sources say possible street closures around Taylor Swift’s wedding are fueling criticism
According to Rob Shuter’s Naughty But Nice Substack, the biggest issue surrounding the rumored Taylor Swift wedding is the possibility that roads around Madison Square Garden could be closed during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.
“New Yorkers already spend enough time sitting in traffic,” one source told Naughty But Nice. “The reaction is, ‘Isn’t Madison Square Garden big enough? Now you need the streets too?’”
The concerns come after Page Six reported that a permit application had been filed with New York City’s Street Activity Permit Office for July 2 through July 4. The application, submitted by Winick Productions, reportedly requests street closures around Madison Square Garden and includes plans for a public tent accommodating between 500 and 999 guests.
Insiders claim the optics are becoming part of the conversation. “People are trying to get home from work, catch trains, or leave the city for the July Fourth weekend,” another source told Naughty But Nice. “Nobody wants to hear that their commute could be disrupted because two very rich people are throwing a wedding.”
Some critics are also drawing comparisons to Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s lavish Venice wedding, which faced backlash over its impact on the city. “After Venice, you’d think celebrities would understand that people don’t like feeling their city has been turned into a private party,” one insider said. “That’s exactly what this risks looking like.”
According to the report, even some longtime fans have questioned whether the situation fits Swift’s carefully cultivated public image. “Taylor’s gift has always been knowing how ordinary people think,” one source told Naughty But Nice. “This feels different.”
Another insider suggested that who actually requested the permits may no longer matter. “People don’t care who filed the permits,” the source said. “They see street closures, traffic delays, and a celebrity wedding. To them, it feels rude—and that’s becoming the story.”
Neither Swift nor Kelce has publicly addressed the wedding rumors or the reported permit application.
