Martha Stewart Points to ‘TODAY’ Host After Halloween Costume Outrage

After Martha Stewart’s 2026 Halloween costume sparked controversy, the 85-year-old is holding ‘Today’ show co-host Craig Melvin responsible. The lifestyle icon dressed up as a homeless person for the spooky season, but the look failed to impress netizens.

Martha Stewart says Craig Melvin accidentally ruined her sweater

Stewart initially shared the pictures on social media but later deleted the post. Pop Base shared screenshots of the now-deleted post. The images showed the lifestyle icon wearing torn, unkempt clothing with dirt on her face. She also held up a sign that read, “I am hungry. Please help!!”

Hours after the post, Stewart addressed the situation in a statement, as reported by TMZ. She said, “I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention.”

While addressing the audience at the CrossCountry Mortgage Sales Rally in Orlando on November 3, Stewart seemingly held Melvin responsible for the situation. She suggested that the broadcaster, who had appeared as Snoop Dogg during the Today show’s Halloween special on October 30, was to blame.

She said Melvin had covered her planned costume sweater in chocolate, forcing her to change her look. Stewart appeared on the show wearing a white sweater featuring the American flag and an Olympic cap. She was there to prepare a spiderweb cake and other festive treats.

She reportedly decided against wearing the sweater to her Halloween party because she thought it was “too dirty” after the segment, according to footage obtained by TMZ. She said she had “only 10 minutes” to get ready and wanted to put together the “easiest costume” possible. She eventually chose to dress up as “a bum.” Stewart recalled looking in the mirror and telling herself, “You really look hungry and homeless.”
