Spain Delivers Its Biggest Box Office Hit of 2026, It Stands No. 3 in All Time List

Spain’s biggest box office hit of 2026 just rewrote the country’s all-time record books. The film has climbed to No. 3 on Spain’s highest-grossing local productions list while also dominating the international awards circuit.

La Bola Negra’s box office makes it the biggest Spanish movie of 2026, third biggest overall

Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi’s La Bola Negra has become Spain’s highest-grossing local film of 2026, Deadline reports. The queer epic inspired by Federico Garcia Lorca’s unfinished work has earned $43.4 million globally. Domestically, it has grossed €36.7 million and sold over 5.5 million tickets.

The film surpassed Torrente Presidente ($31.6 million) as 2026’s top Spanish title several weekends ago. It now ranks as Spain’s third highest-grossing local production of all time. Only Spanish Affair (2014, €56.2 million) and The Impossible (2012, €42.5 million) sit above it.

La Bola Negra also cracked Spain’s all-time top 10 grossing list at No. 10. That list is led by Avatar with €77 million at No. 1. For the 2026 calendar year in Spain, it ranks third behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day (€40.4 million) and The Odyssey (€39.5 million).

The film held the No. 1 spot again in its sixth weekend with $1.4 million. Young indie distributor Elastica handled the Spanish release, marking the company’s largest box office haul ever. Netflix acquired U.S. rights for a reported $5 million after a bidding war at Cannes.

The pic debuted at four New York and Los Angeles theatres on October 16. It posted a $69,300 opening theatre average, the highest ever for a Spanish-language film stateside. Its North American cumulative gross through three weekends at 38 locations stands at $1.2 million.

Spain’s overall box office is pacing 40 percent ahead of 2025, with admissions up 36 percent. The country is on track for its best year at the box office since 2019. La Bola Negra hits France on December 16.
