Resident Evil releases on digital today
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil became available to rent digitally on November 2 at 9 PM PT and November 3 at 12 AM ET.
Sony Pictures Releasing distributed the horror reboot, which hit theaters on September 18 after its Los Angeles premiere on September 15. Meanwhile, Columbia Pictures and Constantin Film co-produced the project with PlayStation Productions, Vertigo Entertainment, and Davis Films.
Austin Abrams leads the cast as Bryan Hodukavich, a medical courier caught in an outbreak of infected monsters across Raccoon City. Additionally, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, and Paul Walter Hauser fill out the supporting roles. Cregger co-wrote the screenplay with Shay Hatten, drawing from Capcom’s long-running video game franchise.
Overall, Resident Evil earned $400 million worldwide against a $75 million budget, setting franchise and career records for Cregger. Its $60 million domestic opening weekend surpassed every previous entry in the series. Furthermore, the film grossed $243 million in international territories.
Critics responded warmly, with a 96% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 303 reviews. Meanwhile, Metacritic assigned it a score of 79 out of 100 from 51 critics. Additionally, CinemaScore audiences gave it a “B+” grade, the highest ever for a Resident Evil film.
As a result, the film holds the distinction of being the highest-rated video game adaptation on both Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. Cregger previously described the project as a “love letter to the games” in an interview. He also noted that he cut most of the jokes after test audiences found the early cut “too funny.”
Furthermore, filming took place in Prague from October 2025 through January 2026, with Dariusz Wolski serving as the film’s cinematographer.
