The Dog Stars is in top 3 on Apple’s digital streaming charts
Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars currently sits at No. 3 on Apple’s iTunes movie charts, according to PopVortex. The post-apocalyptic thriller trails only Verity and Spider-Man: Brand New Day on the digital rankings. The film stars Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, and Guy Pearce.
The movie follows Hig, a civilian pilot surviving in rural Colorado years after a devastating flu pandemic. He lives alongside Bangley, a former Marine turned survivalist, and occasionally flies into a depopulated Denver for supplies. A mysterious radio signal eventually pushes Hig to venture beyond his isolated homestead.
Scott directed the film from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, based on Peter Heller’s 2012 novel. 20th Century Studios produced the project with Scott Free Productions. Principal photography took place across multiple locations in Italy, including Cinecittà Studios in Rome and the Cansiglio plateau.
The film premiered at the Odeon Luxe Leicester Square in London on August 20, 2026. It then opened in the United States on August 28 after a delay from its original March 2026 release date. The movie debuted to just $8 million domestically in its opening weekend.
The Dog Stars has grossed $39 million worldwide against a reported production budget of $70 to $110 million. The film holds a 41% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 222 critic reviews. Metacritic assigned the film a score of 49 out of 100, while audiences gave it a “C+” CinemaScore grade. iTunes currently lists the film at a rental price of $19.99 and a purchase price of $24.99.
Paul Mescal was originally set to star before Jacob Elordi replaced him in January 2025 due to scheduling conflicts with Sam Mendes’ Beatles biopic series.
