Cardi B responds to Mona Love’s comments about colorism and music industry success
Love referred to a brief 2024 Instagram clip in which Cardi discussed her heritage, colorism, and more. Love said, “The reason why dark-skinned girls don’t get the same brand deals is that she’s light-skinned and she’s Dominican.”
She added on her podcast, “I don’t give a f— if it was a match of Cardi B and the b— was equally as talented but she was dark-skinned, there’s no way that person would make it as far as Cardi B.” (via Billboard)
The rapper has responded to the remarks about colorism, referring to her video. Cardi B took to her X account; she wrote, “If we going to talk about what I said lets talk about everything that I said in the 15-minute live from 2024 that got cut down to 13 seconds. I know that colorism is real. I never denied that I seen it for myself. When I worked in the strip club, I seen how men treated me and how they treated dark-skinned women.”
The rapper added that she can never dismiss colorism, not just in the workplace but also in the justice system. She also added she had the right to talk about it because of her experience.
While talking about Mona, she wrote, “Am I upset with Mona?? Yes!! You’ve been in my DMs for years asking me about personal advice… surgery advice… and career advice. If my success is because of my light skin, why you asking me how to pitch yourself and how to get brand deals??” She added that we talked about different things in the clip, and why would you talk about something you are misinformed about.
