John Goodman reflects on possible self-sabotage early in his career

The Hollywood icon recently appeared on Monday’s episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he spoke with host Josh Horowitz about his career, personal life, and several other topics. During the conversation, John Goodman reflected on how he may have sabotaged himself early in his career.

He said, “I’m sure it did. And a lot of it I think might have been self-sabotage.” He then added, “I was working enough as I was. I wasn’t crazy about it, but I wonder if I probably sabotaged myself.”

For context, in one of his interviews, he also claimed, “I still feel like a fat guy, but it’s nice to be able to go into regular clothing stores and buy things.” During the podcast, Goodman opened up about several topics, including how he turned down a nude scene in The Righteous Gemstones following his dramatic weight-loss transformation.

“Since I’m in this business, it is fair game — up to a point,” he added, and admitted that he’s “still trying to get used to my face.” For context, the legendary Hollywood actor has lost nearly 200 pounds, marking one of the biggest and most inspiring transformations of his life. At one point, he weighed around 400 pounds.

Speaking about what led to his weight gain, Goodman said he had struggled with his weight since childhood. He also turned to food for comfort after giving up alcohol in 2007. He described his eating habits during that time as being similar to how an alcoholic drinks, a pattern he called eating alcoholically.
