The 49-year-old actor discussed his experience during a recent interview with Us Weekly. He also confirmed his participation in an upcoming Gilmore Girls documentary. Creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is developing the HBO Max project.
When asked about filming the beloved series, Ventimiglia highlighted the people around him. “What were those days like on set? Hanging out with Jared Padalecki, being with Alexis,” he recalled.
He continued, “The experience is something that I always lean into, that really fills me up.”
Ventimiglia also shared a specific memory involving Bledel. The former costars once filmed together on Warner Bros.’ back lot. He remembered carrying a prop bag that looked unusually large.
“The prop guy wanted to make really light,” he explained. However, Ventimiglia wanted the bag to look convincing on camera. “But I [said], ‘Yeah, but it looks full, and it’s huge, so it should be heavy. Put a sandbag in it,’” he recalled.
The actor clarified that his memories weren’t necessarily tied to particular episodes. “The episodes are for an audience to pick apart, dissect,” he explained. Instead, he valued the experience of bringing the show to life. Their onscreen romance eventually developed into a real-life relationship. The two reportedly dated for nearly four years before separating in 2006.
Despite their breakup, Ventimiglia’s latest comments reflected fondness for their shared experiences. He also expressed admiration for Sherman-Palladino and costar Lauren Graham.
“I think the world of Amy, and Lauren [Graham], too,” he said about the upcoming documentary. He admitted he hadn’t recorded his contribution yet. The actor also joked about how long ago the series premiered. “It was 26 years ago that I made the show,” he pointed out.
Although the original romance ended, Jess and Rory remain popular among fans. Their relationship continues to fuel discussions about the show’s memorable couples.
