A royal expert claimed that King Charles is behind the return of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to the UK. They added that the public can’t be fooled into thinking that the monarch wasn’t aware of their relocation. The Sussexes stepped down from their royal duties in 2020 and returned to the UK in August 2026.
Expert talks about how King Charles can’t fool the public
Royal journalist Tom Sykes recently shared his thoughts about Prince Harry and Markle’s return to the UK. He said, “The public are not fooled. They know Charles is behind the return of Harry. They do not buy the line that he didn’t know, that the King was as surprised as anyone to find his younger son setting up home in the Cotswolds.”
He added that the public had drawn the “obvious” conclusion that the monarch wanted his younger son home. This is because he seemed to have done nothing to prevent his arrival. Sykes mentioned, however, that the Sussexes’ return had come at the cost of his legacy, which had already been impacted by Andrew Mountbatten Windsor (via The News International).
This news comes amid a recent poll conducted by the Daily Express that showed opposition to the Sussexes’ UK move. The majority of voters wanted Harry and Markle to leave the country and move to Australia. Only 22% wanted them to stay.
Harry and Markle moved to the UK over a month after their private reunion with King Charles at Highgrove House in July 2026. Currently, they live in a non-royal base outside London and aren’t provided taxpayer-funded security.
Buckingham Palace also released a letter previously clarifying that the couple are private individuals and that any of their charity work is their personal, not associated with the royal family. The couple reportedly took issue with the word “private individuals,” as they preferred being labelled as “public figures.”
