Kathy Najimy Leaves the Door Open for Another ‘Hocus Pocus’ Reunion

Kathy Najimy has shared a cautious update about reprising Mary Sanderson in the upcoming Hocus Pocus. Although the actress has no new details to share about the third installment, she says the character remains close to her heart. She also appreciates the film’s enduring popularity among Halloween fans.

The Sanderson sisters may have more magic left

Speaking to Entertainment Now, Najimy said, “I don’t have any details to share on that one yet, but I can tell you that Mary will always hold such a special place in my heart.” She added that Hocus Pocus has become a Halloween tradition for many families. “I’ll always have a soft spot for a little Halloween mischief, so who knows what the future holds!”

Najimy reunited with Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker for Hocus Pocus 2 in 2022, nearly 30 years after the original film. Returning to her role felt natural, she recalled. “Stepping back into Mary’s shoes after all these years felt like no time had passed, and I didn’t have to go looking for her. She’s just in there!” She described the reunion and the fans’ response as “a gift.”

Working with Midler was particularly special for Najimy, who had admired the actress for years. “I’ll never get over singing backup for Bette Midler,” she said, recalling how her younger self would have been thrilled. She even recalled dressing as a giant bunny and delivering herself backstage as a singing telegram for Midler. She joked that she revealed these stories gradually while filming so Midler wouldn’t “run for the hills!”

Meanwhile, people still recognize Najimy for other popular roles, including Sister Mary Patrick in Sister Act and Peggy Hill in King of the Hill. Najimy said she is preparing to record the animated show’s 300th episode and still enjoys voicing Peggy.

Najimy is also helping develop a project inspired by Gloria Steinem, whom she described as a close friend and one of her heroes. She is also part of Disney’s upcoming animated film Hexed. As Najimy pursues new projects, fans can also look forward to the possibility of seeing her reprise Mary Sanderson.
