Elton John’s Longtime Collaborator Says He Could Be ‘Horrible’ on Tour

Elton John and Bernie Taupin have built a lasting music partnership, but their time together has not always been easy. Taupin recently opened up about the singer’s behavior during their years on the road. He remembered times when John challenged his patience. Still, the lyricist made it clear that their bond has always meant a great deal to him.

In an interview with The Times, Taupin discussed John’s difficult moments while touring together. “He could be really horrible and difficult,” the lyricist said. Taupin said he’d often rolled his eyes rather than take any action because saying something could make John do something worse. He also joked about an outfit that tested their friendship during a 1980 visit to New York.

John once dressed as Donald Duck in Central Park, a look Taupin clearly remembered. “He knew about which outfits made me want to kill him,” Taupin said. Despite such moments, he shared warm memories of their close relationship. “He said I was the brother he never had,” Taupin recalled, adding that John always saw the best in him.

The pair first worked together while writing songs for other singers, including Cilla Black and Engelbert Humperdinck. Taupin admitted they struggled with those early assignments. He said he lacked musical knowledge and copied popular styles while drawing stories from books. “I was flying by the seat of my pants,” he told The Times, describing how little he knew about songwriting.

Taupin also reflected on the future of their partnership. John retired from touring in 2023, and Taupin is unsure whether they will create more music together. “You never can tell, and it’s a bit late in the day, but never say never,” he said. John still calls him regularly, leaving Taupin open to whatever their long musical journey may bring.
