Elon Musk finally offered a glimpse at the AI-generated Odyssey he promised earlier this year. However, the seven-minute Grok Imagine episode has already given viewers plenty to question. The criticism stands out because Musk promoted the project as a more historically accurate alternative to Christopher Nolan’s blockbuster. Some viewers now say the AI-generated Odyssey does not live up to that promise.
Viewers question the historical accuracy of Grok’s adaptation
Grok Imagine released “Episode 1” of its Odyssey series on Oct. 23. Wonder Studios and director Dev Walker worked with the AI platform on the seven-minute clip.
The episode follows Odysseus before and during the journey to Troy. Viewers quickly pointed to details they felt conflicted with Musk’s promise of historical accuracy.
According to Euronews, one viewer noted that the characters speak English rather than Greek. Others questioned the clothing, architecture, and depiction of ancient Greece.
The storytelling also raised questions. Homer’s Odyssey begins after the Trojan War, while Grok’s opening episode depicts events leading up to and during the conflict.
One X user called the video “pure garbage.” Another argued that it showed “how little AI understands art or humans.”
The backlash comes three months after Musk announced plans for Grok Imagine to make a full-length Odyssey before the end of 2026. At the time, he promised a version that would remain “true to the art of Homer.”
Musk announced the project after months of criticizing Nolan’s adaptation. Musk attacked Lupita Nyong’o’s casting as Helen of Troy and later continued criticizing her involvement in the movie. Those comments prompted Jimmy Kimmel to mock Musk’s criticism of Nolan.
Actor Colman Domingo later ridiculed Musk’s promise of a “historically accurate” AI movie.
The seven-minute episode does not represent the full movie Musk originally promised. Grok Imagine now calls it the first installment of a series. The company has not announced a release date for a feature-length version.
For now, Musk’s AI experiment has created another debate about The Odyssey. This time, viewers are directing their questions about accuracy at his own adaptation.
