Seth Rogen and Penélope Cruz are bringing an adult comedy to streaming audiences, pairing two recognizable screen talents in a film aimed at viewers who enjoy humor with fewer filters. The movie has attracted attention on HBO Max, giving subscribers another comedy to discover.
The Invite tops HBO Max streaming charts upon debut
According to FlixPatrol, The Invite has climbed to No. 1 on HBO Max’s top 10 movies chart in the United States. That position puts the film ahead of other titles like The Death of Robin Hood, The Housemaid, Backrooms, Freddy vs. Jason, Coraline, Corpse Bride, and more.
Olivia Wilde steps behind the camera and takes on the role of Angela, with Seth Rogen starring as her husband, Joe. Cruz plays Piña, while Edward Norton joins the mix as Hawk. The film kicks off with a marriage on shaky ground. Joe and Angela invite their upstairs neighbors over for dinner, but what starts as a seemingly ordinary get-together soon spirals into an awkward, boundary-pushing encounter.
As the evening takes an unexpected turn, both couples must face the realities of their relationships. Rashida Jones and Will McCormack penned the screenplay, drawing inspiration from Spanish filmmaker Cesc Gay’s movie, Sentimental.
The premise might be simple, but the film served big laughs alongside some brutally honest takes on married life. Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 96% critics’ score and an 89% audience score, while IMDb users rate it 7.4 out of 10. Fans have also warmed to the playful chemistry between Rogen and Wilde. Norton adds another standout performance, giving the movie an extra spark.
A24 brought the film to theaters, teaming up with Annapurna Pictures, FilmNation Entertainment and Permut Presentations. David Permut, Ben Browning and Megan Ellison took charge as producers.
The movie also delivered a solid box office run. With a reported $15 million budget, it pulled in $61 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo.
