Horror fans will be waiting eagerly for the release of yet another movie in The Exorcist franchise next year. However, Ellen Burstyn appears to have had enough of the franchise, judging by her recent comments about Mike Flanagan’s upcoming project.
In a recent interview with Variety‘s Clayton Davis, Burstyn expressed her annoyance towards the latest iteration of The Exorcist. Commenting on The Exorcist: Martyrs, the 93-year-old actress questioned whether the franchise had been extended too far. She said, “Isn’t there enough already of the ‘Exorcist’ thing?” The Flowers in the Attic star also added, “It’s enough already.”
Set for a 2027 release, The Exorcist: Martyrs’ summary, per IMDb, reads, “A determined rookie detective eager to establish herself confronts a horrifying darkness that challenges her deepest convictions and tests everything she thought she knew about right and wrong.”

Ellen Burstyn appeared in David Gordon Green’s The Exorcist: Believer movie
Ellen Burstyn was first introduced as Chris MacNeil in the 1973 horror classic The Exorcist, directed by William Friedkin. She portrayed a desperate mother trying to save her daughter, Regan, from demonic possession. Her performance in the 1973 film was highly praised and also earned her an Academy Award nomination for the Best Actress category. Fifty years later, Burstyn reprised the role in The Exorcist: Believer (2023).
The 93-year-old actress reprised her role as Chris MacNeil in David Gordon Green’s horror film The Exorcist: Believer. Green revealed that Burstyn initially rejected the offer, responding with a “hell no.” The filmmaker reflected on his conversation with the Interstellar star and stated, per Variety, “Her immediate answer was, ‘Hell no.’ I think people have approached her many times about sequels, so I said, ‘If you won’t be in my movie, at least be my friend.'”
Green and Burstyn continued discussing the film before he sent her the script. Gordon added, “When I then sent her the script, I think she was probably, in my eyes, pleasantly surprised that I’d incorporated some of the conversations that we had, that I’d personalized it for her and taken great lengths to pay respect to the Chris MacNeil character 50 years later.” Burstyn ultimately agreed to reprise the role.
