Carrie’s prom massacre change has split viewers after the Prime Video finale. Mike Flanagan’s new series changes who controls the violence, giving the famous ending a different meaning.
The original story makes Carrie’s revenge pivotal to the tragedy at prom. Flanagan’s version adds Emaline West, an astral projector who becomes Carrie’s ally. After the pig’s blood falls on the main character, Emaline offers to “take the wheel,” changing how the massacre plays out.
Reacting to the twist on X, user @oyemnassxo wrote, “Carrie was absolutely terrifying; the shadow finally takes over Carrie and becomes pure terror. Drenched in pig’s blood, surrounded by raging fire and completely wiping out the entire prom with zero mercy.” @TheHollowNox posted, “Yeah, people are going to hate the changes to Prom Night. I’m not saying I do, but I’d be shocked if viewers accepted this new vision of Carrie.”
@discoanddonuts said, “Show does a terrible job with the prom sequence. It’s actually insane. Relentless jump cuts, confusing blocking, and the constant transitions from the prom to the interviews that repeatedly halt any momentum the scene builds. So disappointing.”
@starkcanarie shared, “I was really vibing with Carrie, most of the changes are very refreshing, but personally I think some of the decisions made towards the finale make it fall off a bit and undercut what could’ve been a very satisfying end, and what was meant to feel bittersweet rings a little hollow.”
What is Mike Flanagan’s new Carrie show about?
Mike Flanagan’s series is an eight-episode show based on Stephen King’s 1974 novel. It follows Carrie White after her father’s death forces her into public high school for the first time. There, she faces bullying, social media cruelty, and mysterious telekinetic powers.
The series expands King’s story with new characters and a modern setting. Emaline West is one of those additions, and she can use astral projection to interact with Carrie. Her involvement becomes crucial when Carrie’s powers spiral during the prom massacre.
The show also changes her ultimate fate compared with the original story. Carrie survives the finale and leaves town with the real Emaline. All eight episodes are now streaming on Prime Video.
