A24’s Tony Finally Sets HBO Max Streaming Release Date

A24’s critically acclaimed biopic Tony about a legendary chef’s wild early years finally has a streaming release date. The film’s upcoming HBO Max debut joins a stacked November lineup alongside several major premieres.

Tony to release on HBO Max next month

The A24 film Tony will debut on HBO Max on November 20, according to Warner Bros. Discovery’s official press release. The biographical comedy-drama follows a 19-year-old Anthony Bourdain as he travels to Provincetown, Massachusetts, and discovers the chaotic world of a restaurant kitchen during a transformative summer.

Matt Johnson directed the film from a script he co-wrote with Matthew Miller, Todd Bartels, and Lou Howe. The story draws from Bourdain’s 2000 memoir Kitchen Confidential. Tim White, Trevor White, Johnson, and Miller produced the project under Amazon MGM Studios, Star Thrower Entertainment, and Zapruder Films.

Dominic Sessa stars as the young Bourdain alongside Antonio Banderas, Emilia Jones, Leo Woodall, Stavros Halkias, Dagmara Dominczyk, and Rich Sommer. The film first opened in select U.S. theaters on August 7 before expanding nationwide on August 21. It has earned $19 million at the box office so far.

Critics responded favorably to the film upon its theatrical release. It holds a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 234 reviews with an average score of 7.7 out of 10. Metacritic assigned it a weighted average of 75 out of 100 based on 50 critics.

Tony joins a packed HBO Max November slate that includes the Season 4 premiere of The Gilded Age on November 1 and the second season of City of God: The Fight Rages On on November 8. HBO Original documentaries When a Witness Recants, The Hotline, The Buffalo Miracle, and The Slightest Touch also arrive throughout the month. The Magic Faraway Tree rounds out the new additions on November 27.
