Netflix has the most unexpected No. 1 streaming show right now, and it’s not The Diplomat. An anime series based on a video game franchise has taken the top spot on the platform’s U.S. charts.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners is topping Netflix charts with new season
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has climbed to the No. 1 spot on Netflix’s TV show charts in the United States. The anime series reached the top position on October 21, 2026, according to FlixPatrol streaming data. Its rise follows the release of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, which debuted on Netflix on October 20, 2026.
CD Projekt Red and Studio Trigger originally produced the 2022 series as a tie-in to the video game Cyberpunk 2077. Notably, the first season earned universal critical acclaim and holds a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes from 16 reviews. Additionally, it won Anime of the Year at the 7th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2023.
Subsequently, CD Projekt Red announced the standalone sequel series in July 2025. Most of the original creative team returned for the new installment. Kai Ikarashi took over as director, while Bartosz Sztybor served as writer, producer, and showrunner. Meanwhile, Masahiko Otsuka returned as scriptwriter, and Ichigo Kanno joined as character designer. The sequel introduces an entirely new story and cast separate from the first season.
Furthermore, the original series significantly boosted Cyberpunk 2077 sales after its 2022 debut. Viewers logged 14.88 million viewing hours during its first week on Netflix. As a result, the game crossed 20 million copies sold while riding the anime’s popularity wave.
Beyond the series, CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michal Nowakowski had earlier signaled plans for more animated tie-ins. Netflix then released a short teaser for the sequel in September 2024. The franchise has since expanded into manga and video game collaborations. Specifically, a prequel manga, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Madness, launched in December 2024. Lucy from the series also appeared as a playable character in Guilty Gear Strive in August 2025.
