Roland Mouret describes the mistake involving Kate Middleton’s stylist
Meghan Markle’s designer friend Roland Mouret has revealed how an unintentional blunder involving Kate Middleton’s stylist reportedly strained their friendship. In his memoir, “I Am Roland Mouret: The Butcher’s Boy Who Dressed the World,” the French fashion designer recalled how the Duchess was so upset by the incident that she told him she would never wear his designs again.
In an excerpt published by The Times on October 16, Mouret explained that he offered to send Markle a selection of his best designs after she began dating Prince Harry. The designer anticipated that she would need an extensive wardrobe for the numerous engagements and functions she would attend as her relationship with the royal family progressed. Markle reportedly welcomed the offer.
Mouret subsequently instructed his team to send a special collection of clothing to the palace, emphasizing that the pieces should remain available to Markle for as long as she needed them. He recalled telling his team: “Leave them there as long as she wants them. Don’t follow up on it and do not talk about it to anyone at all, here or outside.”
However, the arrangement took an unexpected turn when a member of Mouret’s team contacted Kate Middleton’s stylist at Kensington Palace to coordinate the return of the clothes sent to the “Suits” star. Markle reportedly learned about the communication and called the designer to express her frustration.
According to Mouret, the Duchess of Sussex confronted him over the incident, saying: “You don’t realize what you’ve done! You’ve embarrassed me!”
Although the French designer attempted to calm her down, Markle reportedly remained firm in her response. She told him that she would never wear his designs again, leaving their friendship strained.
Reflecting on the fallout, Mouret said: “Meghan’s decision not to wear my clothes was hers, not the palace’s, not anybody else’s. I don’t think anyone else cared.”
Despite the disagreement, the designer and the Duchess eventually appeared to put the incident behind them. Mouret later invited Markle to wear his creations again, and she reportedly accepted the offer, suggesting that the pair had reconciled.
