As reported by PEOPLE magazine, during his appearance on the MasterClass series, he reflected on his experience with grief. He was 12 when his mother died in 1997. Per the news outlet, he explained to Dr. Mary-Frances O’Connor that he had a fear of losing connection to his mother by healing emotionally.
According to the publication, Harry said, “I’d spent so long emotionally numb, to a large extent, because I felt disloyal and guilty for the possibility of being happy and joyful without her.” He explained that he felt like he “had to be sad and I had to be emotionally numb.” This was allegedly to prove that the Duke of Sussex missed his late mother, Diana.
Furthermore, per the magazine, while on the show, Harry also talked about one specific realization. It was reportedly something that totally turned his outlook upside down. The Prince said, “The reality is, what I discovered was actually that she just wanted me to be happy.” He explained, “And that was a huge mental shift for me. It freed me, and it gave me a whole different outlook on life.”
Meanwhile, per the news outlet, Harry further talked about what he wants from his beloved late mother, Diana. “Everything I do, everything I put my energy towards, I hope that my mother will be proud about it,” he shared.
