The Donald Trump Space Force uniform concept has drawn a pointed response from “Starship Troopers” director Paul Verhoeven. Trump recently shared an AI-generated uniform concept inspired by the 1997 sci-fi movie. Verhoeven, meanwhile, has explained that the film’s militaristic visual style was deliberately designed to evoke fascist propaganda as part of its satire.
Paul Verhoeven says Starship Troopers intentionally borrowed from fascist propaganda for its satire
The discussion began after Trump posted a dark Space Force uniform concept on Truth Social. The post said the design took inspiration from the “discipline and functionality” of the “Starship Troopers” uniform.
The Space Force concept featured a gray jacket, black accents, a peaked cap, and knee-high boots. Verhoeven has now explained that the visual language of “Starship Troopers” had a very different purpose.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the director said the film’s imagery was based on the visual language of filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, whose work included Nazi propaganda.
“The movie says these characters are fascists without knowing that they’re fascists,” Verhoeven said, according to The A.V. Club.
Verhoeven previously told The Guardian that he deliberately drew on “Triumph of the Will,” Riefenstahl’s 1935 Nazi propaganda film, when developing the movie’s visual style. He also dressed Neil Patrick Harris’ character in clothing that evoked an SS uniform.
Those choices were part of Verhoeven’s satirical approach to militarism, nationalism, and authoritarian imagery. The director has repeatedly discussed how the movie intentionally used the aesthetics associated with fascist propaganda rather than presenting them as an uncomplicated model to admire.
That context is relevant to Trump’s stated “Starship Troopers” inspiration. However, the AI-generated concept shared by Trump is not the U.S. Space Force’s current official service-dress uniform.
The U.S. Space Force began rolling out its service-dress uniform in late 2025, with the process continuing into 2026. The service formally introduced its uniform design and transition policy in January 2026.
The Space Force has not announced that the AI-generated concept shared by Trump will replace its existing service-dress uniform.
Meanwhile, Verhoeven’s comments provide context for the visual references behind “Starship Troopers.” The film’s polished military aesthetic was deliberately tied to the imagery of authoritarian propaganda as part of its satire.
